Introduction
To incorporate satellite and road map imagery from Microsoft’s Bing Maps in your archive, first register for a Bing Map Key, then create new Bing Map base layers in the archive.
Register for a Bing Map Key
- Go to the Bing Maps Dev Center at https://www.bingmapsportal.com/.
If you have a Microsoft account then sign in, otherwise create a new account. - Once you have signed in, enter your new account information in the form provided. Agree to the Bing Maps Platform APIs’ Terms of Use, then click ‘Create’.
- In the Bing Maps Dev Center, select ‘My keys’ under the ‘My account’ menu.
- Click the ‘create a new key’ option and fill in the ‘Create key’ form.
- Application name: Enter the name of your archive.
- Application URL: Enter the URL of your archive, include the https:// prefix. For example, ‘https://myarchive.keepingculture.com’.
- Key type: Select ‘Basic’.
- Application type: Select ‘Education’ or another type that describes the use of the archive. Click ‘Create’ once completed.
- The details for the new Key should now be listed. In the following steps, you will need to copy and paste the Key from this web page, so leave it open for the time being.
Create new Bing Map base layers
- In a new browser window, login to the archive using the Super Administrator account.
- In the main menu, click the ‘Base layers’ link under the Mapping heading in the Administration tab.
- With the Base layers page open, select ‘New base layer’ from the ‘Actions’ cog menu in the top right of the page.
- Choose ‘Microsoft Bing Maps’ as the mapping service provider, then click ‘Continue’.
- Enter the following properties:
- Label: Enter ‘Bing Roads’.
- Type: Select ‘Road’.
- Bing API Key: Copy and paste the Key created in the previous step into this field.Leave all other fields unchanged.
- Click ‘Continue’ and then ‘Done’.
- The new Bing Roads layer should now be listed on the Base layers page. To create a satellite imagery layer, repeat steps 8 to 11 using the following properties:
- Label: Enter ‘Bing Aerial’.
- Type: Select ‘Aerial’.
- Bing API Key: Copy and paste the Key created in the previous step into this field.Leave all other fields unchanged.
- The new Bing Aerial layer should now be listed on the Base layers page. If you wish to use one of the new base layers as the default layer inside the archive, then reorder the layer to the top of the list.
